Margaret Northam

Margaret Northam (British)

Trained at Woolwich School of Art, from which she graduated in 1953, Margaret Northam taught art for many years. Inspired by the wilder landscapes of the British Isles, particularly Scotland, Cumbria and the North Yorkshire Moors, her painting focuses primarily on the landscape. Although rooted in reality, Northam uses a complex of thick layers of paint, scraping and abrading away layers of pigment and scoring lines into its surface, to render her landscapes in an expressive, highly individual manner that takes them towards abstraction.
