John Ryan

John Ryan (British, 1921-2009)

John Ryan went to Ampleforth School and became a freelance illustrator from 1950. Captain Pugwash was first created in 1950 for the Eagle Magazine and has become well-loved as a slightly conceited and inept pirate, but immensely humorous. Finished drawings by John Ryan are uncommon (many of John Ryan’s original book illustrations are held on permanent loan at the Centre for the Study of Cartoons in the University of Kent at Canterbury).
