INSCRIBED AND DATED BY THE AUTHOR to the f.f.e.p, pictorial bookplate, illustrations, charts and plans, errata slips tipped-in, bound in navy blue half-morocco by Bumpus, spine lettered in gilt in 6 compartments with gilt stamp of sugar lump, gilt edges, spine faded, corners a little bumped and rubbed. A technical work aimed at sugar refinery workers in a presentation binding by Olivier Lyle of 'Tate and Lyle' fame. £60.00

Rivington et al., 1766. The Seventeenth. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Rebound in Modern Half Calf. Fair / N/A. woodcut head- and tail-pieces, ornaments, 3 copper-plates (1 double-page), table and index, rebound in dark brown half calf over marbled boards, the spine in 6 compartments, red morocco lettering-piece, titled and dated in gilt on spine. SCARCE, a very handsomely rebound copy of this scarce cookery title. title with ex-ownership signature excised, lacking H2-7, Q6, S3-4, T3-6, U7, some light browning and spotting (consistent with age), binding fine. An incomplete, (this does not detract from the consistency of he book) very good copy of an important and scarce title. The recipes include advice on health matters, planning menus, calculating wage costs. Examples of eighteenth-century wisdom such as "Other nations and people have their peculiar ways of cooking, and do not eat such quantites of solid food as the English do." Recipes such as "To stew green Peas the Jews Way", "To make artificial Asses milk", two pages with the 1750 cures from the negro Caesar - to cure poison and the bite of a rattle-snake, how to make "Hysteric Water", for "an excellent Vomit" and even "To cure the bite of a mad dog." This book makes for fascinating reading and would be ideal for a historian of eighteenth-century life or medicine. £400.00
