BOOKBINDING & RESTORATION

Cambridge Book & Print gallery recommends Bell Golding Fine Bindings. N.B. Please contact the binder directly on +44 (0)7747 688 965. This is a recommended service and is independent of the gallery (i.e. please do not call at the gallery with binding enquiries.)

Bell Golding continue the craft tradition of J. P. Gray & Sons, the fine binders established in Cambridge in 1847. The Head Binder was taught by George Bolton, former Head Foreman of Gray's, and binder to Siegfried Sassoon, Sir Geoffrey and Maynard Keynes and E. M. Forster, among other great collectors. He is proud to have inherited this tradition, and brings equal care to the most modest childhood story book, photograph album or recipe book, as to the finest antiquarian folio or first edition. Brief details of Bell Golding's services follow, but to speak directly to the binder, please call +44 (0)7747 688 965, anytime, or email bellgolding@hotmail.co.uk and they will be happy to answer your query. Bell Golding work for collectors, institutions and major dealers, as well as those who have simply inherited a book worth preserving and of great sentimental value.

BOOK RESTORATION AND PERIOD BINDING

Bell Golding offers a full range of services and techniques, from tasteful restoration and repair in accordance with current conservation practices, to rebinding in appropriate period style. They have decorative tools and fonts suitable for gilt decoration and lettering in all styles of binding between c. 1520 and 1900, and are particularly experienced in restoring English bindings c.1650 to 1830. When restoring a book, Bell Golding aim to ensure that the finished item will sit happily on the shelf next to unrestored books without 'jumping out', and are expert at delicate 'ageing' of leathers and gold leaf. Due to the very great variety of work in this category, prices range from between £35 to £1,000 or more. They do not give valuations, but will advise fully on the implications of restoration work for the commercial value of a book if this is of concern. The finest English tanned leathers are used, handmade papers by Victoria Hall, the renowned Norwich marbler who can reproduce any period paper, and the handmade papers of Ruscombe Mill. They also make slipcases and dust-proof and Solander boxes to protect fragile items. Please see below for the details needed in order to estimate on restoration work. Items can be brought to the workshop which is conveniently situated to the West of Cambridge with free parking (strictly by appointment only).
