Matthew Wright was born in London in 1945. He studied at the Byam Shaw
School of Drawing and Painting, where he won first prize for drawing
and painting and the David Murray Travelling Scholarship to Framce.
In 1966 he won a scholarship to the Royal Academy School. In 1969 he
won First Landseer Prize and Silver Medal for drawing at the Royal Academy
School. He now lives and works beside the River Thames and spends part
of the year in France in the Pyrenees.
Exhibitions of his work have been held at The Bulls Eye Gallery, Lichfield,
Staffs, 1969, The Summit Gallery, Hamstead, 1973, The Perrins Gallery,
Hamstead, 1974, The Lock Shop Gallery, Campden Town 1976, The Langton
Gallery, Chelsea, 1978, Ceret, Pyrenees, France, 1972/1979.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s Matthew has
had numerous exhibitions including shows at the Sue Rankin Gallery,
London, Lauderdale House, Highgate, Burgh House, Hampstead, Lena Boyle
Fine Art, Chelsea, Windsor Street Gallery, Chertsey and a very successful
major retrospective at The Gallery, Cork Street, London in 2002. In
May 2006 an exhibition of his work was held at the Lennox Gallery, Fulham.
His work is held in many private and public collections including: The
Bolton Art Gallery and Museum, The Sheffield Gallery and Museum, The
Inner London Education authority.
Additionally he has illustrated a number of
books including: Mid Sixties Norman Parish Church Architecture for Batsfords,
A set of twelve drawings for the Church of England Project, Cornwall,
Wine illustration work for Tolly Cobbold and for Johnson-Poensgen, Wine
shippers.
