Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881-1973) |
 |
 |
A series of four original lithographs by Picasso showing his stunning
images of bull-fighting. The lithographs were issued unsigned for the
series: A Los Toros avec Picasso and published by Sauret in
1961. There was an edition of 50 signed examples printed from the same
lithographic stones by Mourlot Frères at the same time.
All four are recorded in the Catalogue Raisonné of Picasso's
original lithographs and graphic works: Mourlot. Picasso Lithographe,
nos 348 and 350 and in Bloch. Picasso L'Oeuvre Gravé, 1014-1017.

The stone for this lithograph was originally drawn in black as were
the other three lithographs in the series. However, the publisher, André
Sauret asked Picasso if he would add a little colour to the image. Picasso
had a box of crayons of 24 different colours and used each of them to
colour this image. Much to his surprise the Mourlot studio printers
succeeded in the difficult task of printing all 24 colours plus black.
This explains the two dates on this print. The black version was drawn
6.3.61 and the colours added 21.4.61.
