A charming pencil study of two Barbary lambs by Laura Knight. Barbary Sheep are native to the Atlas Mountains of North Africa. A group of sheep was imported by London Zoo in 1842. Barbary Sheep owe their name to the old name for the North African region, the Barbary coast.

Laura Knight. Clown

Oil Paint and Grease Paint. Autobiography of Laura Knight. London: Ivor Nicholson & Watson Limited, 1936.
First Edition.
8vo
SIGNED BY LAURA KNIGHT WITH A FULL-PAGE PEN AND INK DRAWING OF A CLOWN
on the half-title page.
Frontispiece portrait of the artist, numerous other plain plates reproducing her paintings, drawings and prints, original maroon cloth, yellow and red spine label, some light scattered spotting and browning, rubbed along hinge and a bit shaken. A very good copy of this fascinating autobiography, giving great insight into the work and inspiration of the British artist, perhaps best-known for her paintings of the circus. Signed copies of this title are scarce; however this one complete with a lively original drawing of a clown (one of Knight's favourite subjects) is scarcer still. The catalogue raisonne of her Graphic Work illustrates another copy of her autobiography with a small vignette drawing of a dancer by the artist.
