David Jones was born in Brockley in 1895 to a family of craftsmen. Animals
that were to remain his preferred subject immediately fascinated him.
In 1915 Jones enlisted in the army, an experience that had a profound
effect on his life and work. During these war years he moved towards
accepting the Roman Catholic faith. These two elements, war and religion,
coloured his life from then on.
Jones produced many of the subjects represented here at Christmas to
give to friends and family, tracing some of his favourite themes such
as animals and the nativity. David Jones along with Eric Gill is remembered
as a virtuoso of the technique of engraving; these examples of his craft
serve as a lasting reminder of his talent. These wood engravings and
copper engravings were produced in 1981 to accompany a lavish publication
produced by Clover Hill Editions commemorating the graphic work of David
Jones who died in 1974.
The copper and wood engravings were printed from the original
blocks where possible, where the blocks were in poor condition or destroyed,
they were printed by offset. They span the whole range of his work and
interests, from charming nativity scenes, Gulliver's Travels, Coleridge's
Ancient Mariner, and those influenced by the First World War. The Copper
engravings were printed on handmade paper from Jones' original plates
with full margins by L'Atelier Georges Leblanc, Paris, and Bernard Cook,
Stoke Newington. Will Carter at the Rampant Lions Press, Cambridge printed
the wood engravings from the original wood-blocks and Adrian Lack, Charlbury, Oxon printed the offset prints on Japon paper. 75 numbered portfolios
containing the prints were issued. All measure 31 x 24 cm. (sheet
size) with deckled edges, within cream mounts and
framed in Oak. Unframed printed can be ordered framed for an additional £30.
