Born in London 1948, Hilton presently lives and works in North Norfolk. The making of pictures is a primary human activity. I would like to be seen as picturing the age - demonstrating what it is to be human at this moment-' (interviewed in 1983). It's a tricky thing, the subconscious. There is a form of encoding when we perceive something in the outside world which relates to the memory. We imbue the perceived object with a freight of memory - ' (Matthew Hilton interviewed by Mary Sara).
